Amplifying Climate Knowledge for Climate Action

Revamp Rave Network held a One-Day Capacity Building Training Programme as part of the Revamp Rave Network Climate College Hub. The organization Climate College Hub, is a physical platform created from the Virtual Cohort Programme held in April, 2020. It is a hybrid approach to educate young people on climate change and in turn, educate and advocate for climate action among local communities.

The programme tagged “Amplifying the Climate Change Knowledge for Action” occurred on 8th May, 2021. The experts and environmentalists present at the programme include Olayomade Adeyemo, a Conservative Biologist and Lead from Eleven, Eleven Twelve Foundation (Lagos Chapter), Kuburat Kadiri who is a OSHE expert and Managing Director from YOSHE Consulting, Seyifunmi Adebote a Media Consultant and one of the leading Nigerian youth Environmentalist and Taiwo Adewole an Environmental Sustainability and Waste Policy Expert from RecyclePoint.

The topics discussed included the Basics of Climate Change, citing examples of some foundational backgrounds on what Climate Change entails, factors that influence the changes in climate system were expatiated. Also, the Health Effects of Climate Change were discussed explaining the many factors associated with how climate change affects all areas of healthy human living and other ecosystems. Waste Management, technical-know how steps on waste to wealth conversion, Climate Change and Sustainability and the need to foster more sustainable involvement and actions from young people were explicitly discussed.

Tackling the Climate Crisis has shown that Climate Crisis goes beyond being aware of the growing threat. Still, it heavily depends on the depth of knowledge people have about the Climate Change trends affecting nations differently. Knowing this will only not allow us to bring suitable, meaningful innovation but informed actions that can make an impact to uplift the climate cause.

Olayomade Adeyemo who took the “Basics of Climate Change” said human-induced activities are the prime causes of the changing trends experienced in the global climate system. These changes affect the biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere as a result of fossil fuel burning, deforestation and many land-use mismanagement. However, we can reverse these adverse impact of climate change if we act by planting and reducing our carbon footprint.

Kuburat Kadiri, during her session mentioned that extreme weather events is caused by increase in global warming, precipitation, rising sea level and heatwave. These trends do not only introduce new pests but causes many unknown diseases that threaten human health. Climate change has led to various health-related diseases in recent years. These diseases unknown to many have damaged the environment in numerous ways. It has left hospitals and communities with inadequate response to withstand the health care shocks.

Taiwo Adewole, during his session mentioned that plastic pollution has become a major environmental challenges. Every day about 5 billion tons of waste is produced by plastic bottling companies. These plastics are not only found in drainage but also is an attraction to numerous numerous health-related issues.

Seyifunmi Adebote when further to explain the importance of youth participation to building a sustainable environment against the Climate Crisis. In his session, he said solving the climate crisis comes with innovation and creativity because climate change is a multidimensional challenge.

The session ended with the project coordinator telling the essence of active participation in bringing about Climate Action, she encouraged everyone to be resilient and determined to mitigate climate change as they join the organization on the Kadara Waste Reduction Project.

The project which is a four pathway project that involves;

Youth Capacity Building Project on Climate Change held on the 8th of May.

Climate change education, awareness, environmental sensitisation — 5th and 22nd of May

Introduction of Dori woman — a recycling empowerment programme — 29th of May

And a cleanup exercise — 5th of June 2021
